Explore 6,000 Acres of Berkeley’s History
Read OnExplore
The Berkeley Castle Estate.
The Estate manages 6,000 acres of rural land and property including a wonderful medieval deer park, the famous Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust at Slimbridge, and of course the Castle, which is at the heart of the Estate.
With many properties to care for, we take an active role in the management of our farmland, rivers, forestry, residential and commercial property and take a long-term view of good stewardship, investment and building strong local relationships.
Berkeley town itself goes back in time as far as the Castle, and evidence suggests that there was once a Roman settlement here.

Berkeley Castle
The Berkeley family welcome you to Berkeley Castle; Their ancient fortress home where they have lived since the late 12th Century.
The most remarkable thing about the Castle is that for nine centuries, the building, the Berkeley family, the archives (which go back to the 12th Century), the contents, the estate and the town have all survived together.
Its place in history is significant, not just because it is still intact, but because the Berkeley family and their home have played an important part in the power struggles of so many centuries.
